A carbon brush is an electrical component that slides on the commutator or slip ring to transmit current to the rotating coil of an electric machine from fixed contacts, or vice versa. Proper contact is ensured by spring force. The carbon brush is a small pressed block of carbon, rounded at the end to fit the rotating part of the electrical machine.
The name "carbon brush" comes from the time when this task was still performed by thin copper and bronze wires in brush form. Carbon brushes "secretly" perform their tasks, which is why they are often neglected, even though they are essential for the reliable operation of electric machines. Carbon brushes are subject to wear, so they need to be replaced over time.
